Description
Hidden Botanicals – Falling Sycamore celebrates the quiet beauty of woodland seeds as they spiral gently to the forest floor, capturing a fleeting moment in nature and preserving it in pewter.
Inspired by the elegant flight of sycamore seeds, this sculpture combines carefully preserved sycamore leaves and seed pods with individually sculpted pewter botanical elements. The preserved botanicals appear to gradually transition into metal, creating a quiet dialogue between the organic and the permanent. The sculpted pewter seed pods appear to hover above the composition, suggesting the gentle movement of falling “helicopter” seeds as they prepare to begin a new life.
The hand-formed pewter body provides a flowing foundation for the preserved botanicals, with the natural textures and warm autumn tones contrasting beautifully against the cool, reflective pewter. Every composition is individually arranged by hand, making each sculpture entirely unique.
Whether viewed from a distance or explored close up, the sculpture reveals intricate details that celebrate the remarkable forms found within the natural world while inviting contemplation of growth, change and renewal.
Hidden Botanicals – Falling Sycamore can be purchased in two ways. Displayed within a hand-turned wooden bowl, finished in crisp white, it becomes a striking wall-mounted artwork using the concealed keyhole fixing on the reverse, requiring only a single screw for installation. Alternatively, the botanical sculpture can be purchased without the bowl, allowing it to be displayed as a sculptural object on a coffee table, shelf, console table or sideboard.
Its versatility allows it to complement a contemporary home, office, reception area or gallery, bringing a subtle connection to the natural world while creating a distinctive focal point.
Each sculpture is individually handmade in my Sussex studio using traditional pewtersmithing techniques alongside carefully preserved botanical specimens, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind contemporary artwork.
Materials: Hand-formed pewter, preserved sycamore leaves and seed pods, individually sculpted pewter botanical elements and optional hand-turned wooden bowl.
Bowl: 22cm diameter
About the Botanicals
The preserved leaves and seed pods used within this sculpture have undergone a specialist preservation process in which their natural moisture is replaced with a glycerine-based solution. This allows the botanicals to retain their softness, flexibility and natural character rather than becoming brittle or dry.
With appropriate indoor care, the preserved botanicals are intended to remain beautiful indefinitely, retaining their softness and flexibility thanks to the specialist glycerine preservation process. Each sculpture is supplied with a soft brush for the gentle removal of dust. Displaying the work away from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive humidity will help preserve the natural materials so the sculpture can be enjoyed for generations.
