Hidden Ferns is inspired by the quiet beauty of the woodland floor, capturing a moment where delicate fern fronds appear to transition from the organic into pewter.
Carefully preserved ferns are combined with individually sculpted pewter botanical elements to create a layered piece that celebrates the intricate forms found in nature. Unlike the other works in the Hidden Botanicals collection, this piece features delicate cut-out fern details within the pewter itself. These pierced forms allow light to pass through the sculpture, creating subtle shadows that echo the fine structure of the living fern and add another layer of depth and movement.
The warm, earthy tones of the preserved botanicals sit alongside the cool, reflective surface of the pewter, creating a delicate transition between natural materials and hand-crafted metal. The result is a contemporary botanical sculpture that invites closer observation, revealing new details from different viewpoints.
Every arrangement is individually composed by hand, making each sculpture completely unique. Natural variations in the preserved botanicals ensure that no two pieces are ever the same.
Hidden Ferns can be purchased in two ways. Displayed within a hand-turned wooden bowl, finished in crisp white, it becomes a striking wall-mounted artwork using the concealed keyhole fixing on the reverse, requiring only a single screw for installation. Alternatively, the botanical sculpture can be purchased without the bowl, allowing it to be displayed as a sculptural object on a coffee table, shelf, console table or sideboard.
Its versatility allows it to complement a contemporary home, office, reception space or gallery, bringing a subtle connection to the natural world while creating an elegant focal point.
Each sculpture is individually handmade in my Sussex studio using traditional pewtersmithing techniques alongside carefully preserved botanical specimens, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind artwork.

About the Botanicals
The preserved leaves, ivy and ferns used within this sculpture have undergone a specialist preservation process in which their natural moisture is replaced with a glycerine-based solution. This allows the botanicals to retain their softness, flexibility and natural character rather than becoming brittle or dry.
The honesty seed heads are naturally dried and have been carefully selected for their delicate, translucent quality, providing a beautiful contrast to the preserved foliage and sculpted pewter elements.
With appropriate indoor care, the preserved botanicals are intended to remain beautiful indefinitely, retaining their softness and flexibility thanks to the specialist glycerine preservation process. Each sculpture is supplied with a soft brush for the gentle removal of dust. Displaying the work away from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive humidity will help preserve the natural materials so the sculpture can be enjoyed for generations.
