New Life Sculpture

£2,900.00

New Life Sculpture is part of my ‘Home Series’.

‘Home gives us a feeling of belonging, no matter whom or what we are.

Whether it is a nest, house, habitat, or ocean, it’s a place to feel safe, connected or part of a community. A home provides space for an individual to shelter, sleep and eat in relative peace. For families, tribes or colonies it has the added opportunity to communicate and share knowledge.

Whatever organism we may be, we all have a place where we feel comfortable – we know it as home.’

Description

Behold, the wondrous cycle of life that unfurls before our very eyes! In the tranquil refuge of my garden pond, nestled along the edge, frogspawn developed. Protected and hidden by the beautiful bright yellow flowers and large scalloped leaves of the Marsh Marigold.

The spawn grew and matured within their sheltered ‘Home’ until fully developed and ready to emerge as young tadpoles.

New Life was the outcome of time spent observing the frogspawn develop in my garden pond. The piece developed from observational drawings, models and also working through the many technical challenges and making processes to create this final piece.

I commissioned Elizabeth Welch, a glass lamp worker, to make the frogspawn in glass, which I then modelled into a shell to surround it to before casting in pewter.

This helped the light reflect through the glass, creating that soft sparkle, but also caused the ripple of water around the frogspawn that you see around the eggs.

This piece creates an intriguing focal point for the home, office or public space. It can be viewed from any angle, as the marsh marigold leaves and flowers emerge from the pond sheltering the fragile frogspawn underneath.

Materials: Pewter, Coloured Cast Concrete, Steel, Glass
