Description
Ivy is often overlooked, quietly weaving its way through woodland floors and climbing ancient trees, yet it is one of nature’s most resilient and enduring plants. Throughout the seasons it provides shelter, late nectar for insects and winter berries for birds, becoming a constant thread running through the changing landscape.
Hidden Ivy and Sycamore celebrates this understated beauty by bringing together sculpted pewter ivy leaves with preserved preservednferns and sycamore seeds. A hand-formed bowl sit at the bottom of the piece, creating an organic structure from which preserved ferns, naturally dried sycamore seeds and oak leaves appear to emerge. The movement of the sycamore seeds suggests the quiet journey of new life carried on the wind, while the ivy gently binds the whole composition together.
Each sculpture begins by carefully preserving selected botanicals before forming the pewter by hand over a steel former. Individually sculpted pewter ivy leaves and botanical details are then added, allowing the metal and natural materials to intertwine. Every piece is created individually in my Sussex studio, making each sculpture completely unique.
The sculpture can be displayed as a freestanding centrepiece on a table, console or shelf, allowing it to be appreciated from every angle. Alternatively, it can be purchased with a hand-turned white wooden bowl, enabling it to be hung on the wall using the concealed keyhole fixing on the reverse. Installation requires only a single screw.
Hidden Ivy and sycamore brings together movement, texture and the quiet persistence of woodland plants, preserving a fleeting moment from nature within a contemporary sculptural artwork.
About the Botanicals
The preserved ferns used within this sculpture undergo a specialist preservation process in which their natural moisture is replaced with a glycerine-based solution. This allows them to retain their softness, flexibility and natural character rather than becoming brittle or dry.
The sycamore seeds and oak leaves are naturally dried and carefully selected for their colour, form and movement, creating a beautiful contrast with the cool tones of the pewter.
With appropriate indoor care, the preserved botanicals are intended to remain beautiful indefinitely, retaining their softness and flexibility thanks to the specialist glycerine preservation process. Each sculpture is supplied with a soft brush for the gentle removal of dust. Displaying the work away from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive humidity will help preserve the natural materials so the sculpture can be enjoyed for generations.
