Description
Beech woodland has a unique atmosphere. Sunlight filters through the canopy, illuminating layers of leaves and ferns beneath while branches overlap to create an ever-changing pattern of light and shadow. Throughout the seasons the woodland transforms, yet its quiet structure remains.
Hidden Beech captures that layered beauty in pewter and preserved botanicals. Rather than recreating the woodland literally, the sculpture evokes the feeling of standing beneath the canopy, looking through overlapping leaves as light moves between them.
The hand-formed pewter body is shaped over a steel former before sections are carefully cut away, allowing light to pass through the sculpture. These open areas create changing silhouettes, giving the piece a sense of depth and movement that changes as you walk around it.
Sculpted pewter beech leaves emerge amongst preserved fern fronds and beech leaves, each element carefully positioned to create a layered composition. The contrast between the cool metallic surface of the pewter and the warm natural tones of the woodland materials reflects the balance between permanence and the fleeting beauty of nature.
Each sculpture is individually handmade in my Sussex studio. The botanicals are carefully selected and prepared before being combined with hand-formed pewter, making every piece completely unique.
The sculpture can be displayed as a freestanding centrepiece on a table, shelf or console, allowing it to be viewed from every angle. Alternatively, it can be purchased with a hand-turned white wooden bowl and displayed on the wall using the concealed keyhole fixing on the reverse, requiring only a single screw.
About the Botanicals
The fern fronds used within this sculpture are preserved using a specialist glycerine process which replaces their natural moisture. This allows them to retain their softness, flexibility and rich colour rather than becoming brittle over time.
The beech leaves are naturally dried and carefully selected for their delicate form and warm autumn tones, creating a beautiful contrast with the hand-worked pewter.
With appropriate indoor care, the  preserved botanicals are intended to remain beautiful indefinitely, retaining their softness thanks to the specialist preservation process. The sculpture is supplied with a soft brush for gentle dusting. Displaying the work away from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive humidity will help preserve the natural materials for many years to come.
